Sketchbook in Atlanta + Online Gallery Sale!

My sketchbook is in Atlanta this weekend! It traveled there in the new Sketchbook Project Bookmobile, a rebuilt 1985 Piaggio with custom shelves, hand painting, and the ability to carry over 1,000 sketchbooks, but fit into small spaces and even go inside. I'm very excited about my new style of digital prints! An alternative to standard framed prints, the images are mounted on sturdy but lightweight three quarter inch thick foam blocks with lightly textured black edges. Crisp cut edges look clean and modern. Stainless steel hanging mount as well as corner spacers on the back ensure flush-to-the-wall hanging. No frame necessary. These are fine quality prints!

RoCo 6x6 Opens + Sketchbook Project Tour

Each summer Rochester Contemporary Art Center’s "6x6" exhibition and fund-raising auction brings together thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international & local artists, designers, and local school kids. Artworks must be six inches square (my work is 5" square with a 1" border to allow for matting) and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously. All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit RoCo. Artists’ names will be revealed to the buyer upon purchase and all artworks remain on display through July 16. I haven't done this show for a couple of years, so it's good to be back again!

For the 2018 Sketchbook Project, artists could choose from several themes. "Textures, Lines & Graphics" was perfect for me! 

"Sketchbook" is broadly interpreted by participating artists. Mine includes a brief intro plus a total of 28 digital geometric drawings printed on pages made from glossy photo paper and rebound into the 5"x7" book. 

In addition to being held in the permanent collection of the library, the sketchbooks will be digitized and searchable online, and the books themselves will go on tour this summer to Toronto, Chicago, and Atlanta!

Brewery Artwalk Photos

The Artwalk was great fun, as always! Almost constant visitors to the studio and an enthusiastic response to my art made the weekend especially enjoyable. If you missed it, come by for the next one in October! You can also visit via LA Art Tours.

Paragon Iron company. That was painted on the building for a film shoot!

I had a cool new video display for this Artwalk! John set up two monitors
that featured slide shows of my work. You can see the one on the right
beginning to make a transition from one piece of work to another. I had
prints on canvas and metal on the walls, along with some
products. My tote bags were particularly popular!

Studiomate Yvonne Beatty's work is on the left wall; mine is on the right,
with the video monitors on the back wall. We also shared wall space in
the front room which serves as kind of a lobby for the studio.

Here's the poster I made that explains my history in the animation
business and how that connects to the type of art that I make today.

Two of many visitors who were very excited to learn that I had written
cartoons for Scooby-Doo, Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, and many other shows!

Thanks to partner John Semper Jr. for taking photos and for visiting.
It was so crowded that he had to park almost all the way to Las Vegas!

If you've been following my art adventures for the last several years, you know that I was one of a dozen L.A. artists who were invited to be the first in the U.S. to create art on wine barrels for the BOTART International collection. If you'd like to know the story, click here to see photos and read my blog post about making "Tipitina," my painted wine barrel which is third from the front in the photo below. The barrel is painted with confetti shapes and black lines representing the streets of New Orleans, and has Mardi Gras beads on top! About fifteen barrels from the now large collection were on display last weekend at the EXPO Contemporary art show presented by Fabrik Magazine at The Reef in downtown L.A. Tickets are available here. These festive barrels are not for sale, but they are great fun to see, and they are always shown with plenty of art that is available for purchase.

2016 LA Municipal Gallery Open Call

A massive group show of which I'm happy to be a part. The theme of the show is "play." I submitted a small (12" x 12") digital print on canvas from my "Notes" series. I explained in my entry statement that it was inspired by jazz, the most playful of musical forms.

World Art Day at The Brewery: Photos

During World Art Day at The Brewery, a steady stream of visitors to the Atrium were treated to the 30+ barrel BOTART exhibit. It was a perfect venue for their display. I snapped a few photos early on, then kicked back in the chair by "Tipitina" and chatted with fellow artists and everyone else who strolled by. Prior to the closing, two very large tour groups came to the studio as part of the special event. Appropriately, there were many people from other countries on both tours. And what an enthusiastic bunch they were! Lots of interesting conversation, and lots of wonderful comments about the art. It was a very rewarding experience. Thanks to Dale Youngman (tours), Shawn Barrett (BOTART), and Andre Miripolsky (head instigator for all that happened), as well as everyone else involved in the day. And special thanks to those of you who stopped by!

World Art Day at The Brewery: Sunday 4/17

I'm pleased to announce another great opportunity to visit my studio on Sunday, April 17th, when The Brewery Art Colony will open its doors for a special

World Art Day: Los Angeles 2016 Closing Event!

For the second consecutive year, the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk will reprise its leadership role in World Art Day festivities, which were held for the first time ever in the United States in the city of Los Angeles in 2015. This international event, which is led by the non-profits IAA/UNESCO, celebrates international collaboration through art. In honor of this worldwide celebration, Art Walk will host projects in the form of gallery exhibitions, pop-ups, and site-specific installations in private and public spaces. World Art Day: Los Angeles will be held over a 4-day window starting with the April 14th DTLA Art Walk and ending on Sunday, April 17th, 2016, at The Brewery Artists Colony.

There are two parts to the FREE CLOSING EVENT at The Brewery, and you are invited to attend one or both of them:

(1) From 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., a special private guided tour of several studios featuring artists Andre Miripolsky, Yvonne Beatty, Guillermo Bert, Jen Moore, Jill Sykes, Kristine Schomaker, Sean Sobczak, Teale Hatheway, Ted Meyer, and me. Limited space is available; reservations are required.

(2) From 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., the World Art Day Closing Reception at the I-5 Gallery at The Brewery, which includes a special exhibit hosted by BOTART International and the Brewery Artwalk Association. Yes, my BOTART painted wine barrel will be part of a display of over thirty barrels in the Brewery Atrium where the I-5 is located. Reservations are requested for this open-to-the-public reception to make sure everyone can be accommodated.

2016 Spring Brewery Artwalk

The semi-annual Brewery Artwalk on April 2nd and 3rd was great fun once again! Thanks to everyone who stopped by the studio and special thanks to those who purchased art. The weather was perfect: clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. The Brewery Art Association reports that this Artwalk had even more visitors than usual -- and we usually get many thousands coming to the whole campus over the course of the weekend. Our studio had a steady stream of art enthusiasts on Saturday, and only a few quiet moments on Sunday. Kept it interesting for studiomate, Yvonne Beatty, and me! I opted to show almost exclusively digital prints on canvas, plus a few other digital print items. Studiomate Kristine Schomaker didn't open her space this time; instead she spent the weekend visiting fellow artists and taking photos. The BOTART (painted wine barrel) weekend exhibition opened on October 22nd at WestEDGE Design Fair. I was delighted to have participated in last year's event, as well as the recent WestEDGE San Francisco. This year at The Barker Hangar, there were about twenty barrels with accompanying wall art by the BOTARTists. Along with my wine barrel, "Tipitina," I showed an original color pencil drawing entitled, "Summer Samba." Below is a detail.

Although I wasn't able to spend much time at WestEDGE, I was glad that I did have a chance to hang out with my studiomate, Yvonne Beatty.

In this WestEDGE promotional video, you can get a very quick look at the BOTART display at 1:17, as well as a glimpse of some of the BOTARTists waving to camera at 1:35. Although a few more artists showed work this year, the display was much smaller and more compact; last year's exhibit was expansive and elegant. See my photo album on my Facebook Page.
